Foreword

Every other woman I have written about had to be dug out. That was the shape of the work, and for a long time it was the shape of my life: a chemist, a computer, a mathematician, a painter whose name had been sanded off her own canvas — women whose contribution survived only in the margins of the men who had stood beside them, and whose recovery meant going into the record with a light and finding what the record had been built to hide. I knew that work. I was at home in it. Rosalind Franklin is the opposite problem, and it was the opposite problem that drew me across the border of my own subject.

Because Franklin is not hidden. She is the most visible under-credited woman in the history of science. There is a play about her. There is a film coming. There is a university that bears her name, an institute, a Royal Society award, and a rover that will carry her name across a hundred million miles of vacuum to drill into the surface of Mars. A schoolchild who cannot describe the structure of DNA can tell you that a woman was robbed of it. She has been recovered so many times, by so many hands, that the recovery has set into a second kind of erasure: the wronged woman of the double helix, the martyr of Photograph 51, the victim of the men in the room. That is the figure the world keeps. That is the figure I came to distrust.

Because a story can be so well known that it stops being true.

I expected to write the theft. I had my instrument ready — the same instrument I bring to every buried woman, tuned to find the moment the work is lifted from her hands and signed by someone else. And the theft is there; I do not soften it, and this book does not. But the longer I stayed with her, the more I found that the theft was the smallest true thing about her, and the loudest. Freeze her at the photograph and you keep the martyr. You also lose the scientist. You lose the woman who walked out of King's College, where she had been made unwelcome, and went to a shabby laboratory at Birkbeck with old equipment and inadequate funding, and there did the work she herself called her best — the structure of the tobacco mosaic virus, the RNA she showed was woven into the protein and not merely sealed inside it, the research group she built and led. That science was never taken from anyone. It was indisputably, unarguably hers. The legend does not mention it. The legend cannot afford to.

I worked from what any reader can, in principle, reach: the published papers and the memoirs, the testimony of those who knew her as it survives in the interviews and the oral histories others recorded, the press that made her a symbol, and the recent archival reassessment that has complicated the very story it once seemed only to confirm. I conducted no séance and interviewed no ghost. What I did was refuse to let the loudest version stand in for the true one, and read the quieter record underneath it, which is longer and stranger and more to her credit than the martyrdom ever was.

Franklin is worth a book because she is harder than her legend, and because the legend, for all its sympathy, is a cage. She was thirty-seven when the cancer stopped her, and the radiation that almost certainly caused it was the same tool she had used to see further into matter than almost anyone alive. She spent the years she was given being precise about things that mattered, and she was correcting proofs weeks before she died. I did not come to Edinburgh's long habit of women in twentieth-century science to canonize a saint. I came to find the working scientist under the statue. This book is what I found.

Chapter 1 · The Photograph

There is an image that changed the history of biology. It is not a painting or a diagram or a portrait. It is an X-ray diffraction photograph, about the size of a postage stamp, taken in the basement of King's College London in May 1952 by a thirty-one-year-old physical chemist named Rosalind Franklin. The image shows a pattern of dark spots and streaks arranged in an X-shaped cross, surrounded by a faint halo. It is, to the untrained eye, almost nothing. It looks like a smudge, a shadow, a photographic error. It is, in fact, the most consequential scientific photograph of the twentieth century. It is the image that revealed the structure of DNA.

The photograph is called Photo 51. It is called that because it was the fifty-first X-ray diffraction image that Rosalind Franklin exposed in her systematic study of the B form of deoxyribonucleic acid. She did not choose the name for drama. She chose it because she was the kind of scientist who numbered things sequentially and did not skip numbers. The photograph sits now in an archive, and reproductions of it appear in biology textbooks around the world, and most of the students who encounter it in those textbooks can tell you what it shows but cannot tell you who took it, or what happened to her, or how the photograph traveled from her laboratory to the eyes of the men who used it to build the most celebrated model in the history of molecular biology. Most of them know the names Watson and Crick. Most of them do not know the name Rosalind Franklin. This is not an accident. It is the result of a sequence of decisions made by particular men in particular rooms over a period of approximately eighteen months in 1952 and 1953, and the consequences of those decisions have shaped the way the world understands one of the most important discoveries in the history of science.

The story, in the version most people know, goes something like this: James Watson and Francis Crick, two brilliant young scientists at Cambridge, figured out the structure of DNA in 1953. They built a model. They published a paper. They won the Nobel Prize. It was one of the great intellectual achievements of the century. There was a woman involved, somehow. She took a picture. The picture helped. She died young. It was sad. But the discovery belongs to Watson and Crick.

Almost every element of this narrative is either wrong, incomplete, or deliberately misleading.

Watson and Crick did not figure out the structure of DNA through their own experimental work. They built a model, and the model was correct, but the data that made the model possible came from a laboratory at King's College London where Rosalind Franklin and her graduate student Raymond Gosling had been conducting the most rigorous X-ray crystallographic study of DNA that anyone in the world had attempted. The data included precise measurements of the unit cell dimensions, the water content, and the symmetry properties of DNA fibers. The data included, above all, Photograph 51. This data reached Watson and Crick through two channels, neither of which involved Franklin's knowledge or consent. Maurice Wilkins, Franklin's colleague at King's College, showed the photograph to Watson when he visited King's from Cambridge. Max Perutz, who supervised Crick's doctoral work, shared a Medical Research Council report containing Franklin's unpublished measurements. Watson saw the photograph. Crick read the numbers. They built the model. They published the paper. The paper acknowledged Franklin in a brief passage that thanked her for "unpublished experimental results and ideas" but did not describe the nature or the centrality of what she had provided. They received the Nobel Prize in 1962. She did not. She could not. She had been dead for four years.

She died of ovarian cancer on April 16, 1958, at the age of thirty-seven. The cancer was almost certainly caused by the X-ray radiation she had worked with throughout her career. She died of the tool that had produced the image that had been taken from her. She did not know, when she died, that her data had been the decisive factor in Watson and Crick's model. No one had told her. She knew that Watson and Crick had published a model. She knew that the model was correct, because her own data confirmed it. But she did not know how the model had been built, because the men who built it had not told her what they had used, and the colleague who had shown them her photograph had not told her that he had shown it.


This biography is an act of recovery. It is written in the conviction that Rosalind Franklin deserves to be known not as a footnote, not as a cautionary tale about women in science, not as the person who almost discovered the structure of DNA but didn't quite manage it, but as who she actually was: one of the most brilliant experimental scientists of the twentieth century, whose work on coal, on DNA, and on the structure of viruses represented contributions to human knowledge that were, taken together, extraordinary in their range and precision. She was not a victim who happened to do some science. She was a scientist whose work was stolen from her by a system that could not accommodate a woman who was better at the work than the men around her.

The recovery requires confronting the myth. The myth was not constructed by indifferent forces. It was constructed, deliberately, by James Watson, in a book called The Double Helix, published in 1968, ten years after Franklin's death. Watson's book was a bestseller. It told the story of the discovery of DNA's structure as a rollicking adventure, a race between competing laboratories, a triumph of youthful brilliance. It was charming and vivid and almost entirely dishonest. In it, Watson depicted Franklin under the name "Rosy," a name she never used and would have detested. He described her as difficult, as unattractive, as incompetent, as a woman who could not interpret her own data, as an obstacle that had to be circumvented rather than a colleague whose work had to be respected. He described the moment he saw her photograph as a moment of revelation, as though the photograph had been lying around unused, waiting for a mind capable of understanding it, rather than what it actually was: an image that had been shown to him without the knowledge of the woman who had produced it, an image that was part of an ongoing research program that Franklin was conducting with rigor and intelligence, an image whose implications she was working through systematically and would, by the evidence of her own notebooks, have arrived at independently within weeks.

Watson's portrait of Franklin became the world's portrait of Franklin. His book was read by millions. Her notebooks were read by almost no one. His version of who she was displaced the actual person so thoroughly that for decades, the standard account of the discovery of DNA's structure treated her as a minor character in someone else's story, a supporting player who had produced a useful photograph but had not understood what it meant, a woman whose limitations had been fortunate because they had forced the data into the hands of the men who could actually use it.

The actual Rosalind Franklin was nothing like this character. She was precise, methodical, fiercely intelligent, and entirely capable of interpreting her own data. Her laboratory notebooks from the period show her working toward the helical structure of DNA through her own analysis, arriving at conclusions that Watson and Crick reached only because they had access to her measurements. A notebook entry from February 1952 — written months before Photograph 51 was exposed in May of that year — uses the word "helical" to describe the diffraction pattern of the B form, demonstrating that she had recognized the helix long before Watson saw the photograph. A notebook entry from February 1953, written weeks before Watson and Crick's model was completed, contains calculations consistent with a two-chain helical structure, demonstrating that she was approaching the double helix through her own analysis and would, given weeks or months more, have arrived at it independently.

She was not slow. She was careful. She was not unable to see what her data showed. She was unwilling to claim more than the data supported, which is the definition of scientific integrity and which Watson, in his memoir, reframed as intellectual limitation.

The distinction matters. Watson built a model that was correct. Franklin was building an evidence base that would have produced the same conclusion. The difference was not one of intelligence. It was one of method, and one of ethics. Watson was willing to use data he had not generated and had not been given permission to see. Franklin was not willing to claim a structure she had not yet fully demonstrated with her own evidence. The scientific community rewarded Watson's approach and erased Franklin's. The Nobel Prize went to the model builders. The experimentalist who produced the data that made the model possible was not mentioned.


The erasure did not end with the Nobel Prize. It continued through the decades that followed, sustained by Watson's book, by the institutional reluctance of the scientific establishment to revisit its own laureates, and by the simple, grinding fact that Franklin was dead and could not speak for herself. The men who used her data lived long lives. Watson lived to ninety-seven and spent the later decades of his career making increasingly offensive public statements about race and intelligence. Crick lived to eighty-eight and became a distinguished neuroscientist. Wilkins lived to eighty-seven and was, by most accounts, uncomfortable with the role he had played but not uncomfortable enough to correct the record publicly during the decades when correction might have mattered. Franklin died at thirty-seven in a hospital bed in London, working on a scientific paper until she could no longer hold a pen.

The asymmetry is the kind that history produces when one group of people controls the narrative and another group is dead. Watson wrote the book. Franklin did not. Watson gave the interviews. Franklin could not. Watson shaped the story for fifty years. Franklin's story was shaped for her, first by Watson and then by the culture that accepted Watson's account because it confirmed what the culture already believed: that women were not quite capable of the highest levels of scientific thinking, that a woman who was difficult and unsmiling was probably also unpleasant and probably also incompetent, that the real story of the greatest biological discovery of the century was a story about two brilliant men and that any woman who appeared in the story was there as scenery.

The recovery of Rosalind Franklin from this narrative began slowly, in the 1970s and 1980s, with the work of Anne Sayre and then Brenda Maddox, who published the first full-length biography of Franklin in 2002. Maddox's book, Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA, was careful and important and it changed the public conversation. But the conversation it changed was still shaped by the questions Watson had established: Was Franklin robbed? Should she have won the Nobel Prize? Did she understand her own data? These are the questions the myth generates, and they are the wrong questions, because they accept the myth's framework. They treat Franklin as a figure defined by her relationship to Watson and Crick's discovery, rather than as a scientist defined by her own work.

The right questions are different. What kind of scientist was Rosalind Franklin? What did she actually discover, across the full range of her career? What was her coal research, and why does no one mention it? What was her virus research at Birkbeck College, and why did she consider it her best work? What was her method, her intellectual temperament, her approach to evidence? What kind of person was she, outside the laboratory? What did she read, whom did she love, where did she travel, what made her laugh? What would her career have produced if she had lived to sixty or seventy, with forty more years of the kind of work she was doing when the cancer stopped her?

These are the questions this biography asks. They are questions about Rosalind Franklin, not about Rosalind Franklin's relationship to the men who used her data. The distinction is essential. For too long, she has existed in the public imagination only as a function of someone else's story. She deserves her own.


A word about method. This biography follows the approach of the American biographer Stacy Schiff, whose work on Cleopatra, Vera Nabokov, and the women of Salem established a model for recovering historical figures from the legends that have buried them. Schiff's method begins by inventorying the legend: what does the world believe about this person, and whose interests does that belief serve? It proceeds by examining the evidence: what actually survives, what can be inferred from context, and what the silences in the record mean. It concludes with a corrected portrait: not a hagiography, not a polemic, but an evidence-based account of who the person actually was.

The primary sources for this recovery are extensive. Franklin's personal papers and scientific correspondence are held at the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge — a collection that includes letters to her family, letters to colleagues, laboratory notebooks from her coal research, her DNA work, and her virus work, and administrative documents relating to her positions at King's College and at Birkbeck. The King's College London archives hold institutional records relating to her appointment and her departure. The Birkbeck College archives hold records of her time there. Published scientific papers, available in the standard archival databases, provide the documentary record of her research output. Anne Sayre's biography, published in 1975, drew on interviews with Franklin's friends and colleagues conducted while many of them were still living, and provides testimony about her character and her experience that is not available from any other source. Brenda Maddox's biography, published in 2002, is the definitive scholarly account, and it draws on all the primary sources as well as on interviews conducted in the 1990s and early 2000s with surviving participants. James Watson's The Double Helix is primary source material of an unusual kind: not an accurate account of what happened, but an accurate account of how Watson understood what happened and chose to represent it, which is itself essential evidence about the dynamics of the situation. Watson's book is cited throughout this biography, with its inaccuracies identified and its truthfulness assessed against the documentary record.

The method applies to Rosalind Franklin with particular force. The legend is well-documented: Watson's The Double Helix is the primary text of the myth, and it can be placed alongside Franklin's own letters, notebooks, and papers, alongside the recollections of her colleagues and friends, alongside the institutional records of King's College and Birkbeck College and the Medical Research Council, and alongside the published science itself. The comparison between what Watson wrote and what actually happened is not a matter of interpretation. It is a matter of documentary evidence. The myth can be dismantled not with rhetoric but with records.

The evidence tells a different story than the one the world knows. It tells the story of a woman who was born into a prominent Anglo-Jewish family in London in 1920, who was educated at one of the best girls' schools in England and at Cambridge, who spent the war years doing innovative research on the microstructure of coal, who learned X-ray crystallography in Paris and was happy there in a way she had not been before and would not be again, who came to King's College London to study DNA and found herself in an institution that excluded women from its senior common room and assigned her a colleague who resented her independence, who produced the experimental evidence that revealed the structure of DNA and had that evidence taken from her without her knowledge, who left King's College for Birkbeck and did the best work of her career on the structure of viruses, who developed ovarian cancer almost certainly caused by the radiation that was her primary research tool, who continued working until weeks before her death at thirty-seven, and who was then written out of the story she had made possible by the man who had benefited most from the writing-out.

It is a story about science and gender and credit and theft and cancer and radiation and the structure of the molecule that carries the instructions for building every living thing on earth. It is a story about a woman who was extraordinary and a system that was not designed to accommodate extraordinary women. It is a story about a photograph.

We begin where she began. In London. In 1920. In a family that believed in education, in public service, in the rigorous application of intelligence to problems that mattered. In a house in Notting Hill, where a girl was born who would grow up to be one of the most skilled experimentalists in the history of science, and who would die before the world understood what she had done.

Her name was Rosalind Elsie Franklin, and the photograph was hers.
