The Index.

Every title this house has published, set against the life it is about. It exists because of one editorial rule: a Legendary Biographies title names a concrete thing out of the life — a room, a document, a garment, a broadcast — and never the subject's name. The Index is that rule, made checkable.

Because a title should argue something. Choosing the object forces the book to say what, precisely, the life turned on, and a biography that cannot name its own hinge has usually not found it. The subject's name goes on the line underneath, where it can still be searched for.

Yes, once out of 244, and they are marked in the table. Where a subject is universally known by a name that is itself an object or an alias — the cases here are El Chapo — the title and the name collide. We publish the exceptions rather than quietly renaming the books to protect the rule.

Everything listed here is on sale in at least one format. Books that the house has written but not cleared for sale are not listed at all — the Index is the shop's index, not the archive's.
