Foreword
Every book I have written started with a document. A cap table, usually — the ownership spreadsheet that tells you who really controls a company once you strip away the press release. I trust documents the way other people trust their instincts. Give me the S-1, the term sheet, the deposition exhibit, and I can tell you more about a founder than he could tell you about himself, because the numbers do not know how to flatter. That is the whole method. Start with the money and let the money talk.
So I came to Elon Musk the way I come to everyone: through the filings. The world's wealthiest man, more than seven hundred billion dollars by the end of the period this book covers, an ownership structure spread across a rocket company, a car company, a social network folded into an artificial-intelligence holding company, and, for one strange season, a temporary agency of the United States federal government. There was more document here than in any subject I had ever approached. I expected the book to live inside it.
The book would not stay inside it. Every ledger I opened pointed backward — past the valuations, past the IPO, past the first check anyone ever wrote him — to a concrete staircase in a school in Johannesburg, and a house in Pretoria where a father delivered, nightly, the verdict that his son would amount to nothing. I am a business reporter. I am not supposed to find the whole story in a childhood. With this subject I could not find it anywhere else.
Then there was the other problem, the one that made a childhood necessary rather than merely interesting. Musk narrates himself. He is, among the founders I have covered, uniquely fluent in the telling of his own beginning — the emerald mine that did or did not fund the family, the decision at ten to leave his mother and move in with the father, the books, the code sold to a magazine at twelve. He revises it as he goes. A reporter trained on pitch decks learns to distrust the founder's account of the founding; the version a man tells about his own origin is the one he has had the most time to edit. So I went looking for the part of the story that predates his ability to control it. That part is in Pretoria, before there was a company to protect.
I worked from what the public record allows: the memoir his mother published, the long interviews he gave his previous biographer, the court and regulatory filings, four decades of press, and, at one point, a scanned magazine from December 1984 with a twelve-year-old's video-game code printed in the back. I did not go to South Africa to knock on doors, and I want to be honest about that; this is a book built from the record, not from my own reporting on the ground. What the record holds turned out to be enough. It holds the shape of the thing.
And the shape is this: the trait the father used against the son — the relentlessness, the sustained analytical cruelty of a man who could not be argued with — became the son's operating principle. He did not escape the machine his mother had fled in 1979. He rebuilt it, at scale, and pointed it at the physical universe. That is not a psychological footnote to the business story. It is the business story. The car company, the rockets, the hundred-hour weeks, the sleeping bag under the desk near the paint shop, the government office that ran for a hundred days and then dissolved — all of it runs on an architecture that was finished before he turned thirteen.
That is why he is worth a book, and the reason is not the money. The money is the least interesting true thing about him. He is worth a book because he is the clearest case I have ever encountered of a childhood becoming an operating system — legible, documented, still running, now large enough to move a national government. I came to him a cap-table man, certain the answer would be in the filings. I leave having written the one thing I never expected to write, which is the story of a boy at the bottom of a staircase, memorizing.

Chapter 1 · The Boy Who Didn't Blink
A twelve-year-old boy is lying at the bottom of a concrete staircase in a school in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is face-down on the steps, curled toward the wall, shielding his head with his arms. Other boys have thrown him down the stairs and have followed him to the bottom to keep kicking him. The kicks are landing on his ribs, his back, his face. He loses consciousness at some point. He will be hospitalized. His nose will be broken in a way that will require surgery years later, as an adult, and will not quite heal. The boy who organized the attack will not be punished. The other boys who participated in it will not be punished. The school will not discipline anyone. The teachers, when asked about it afterward, will shrug.
The hospitalized boy is Elon Reeve Musk. It is approximately 1983. The attack is one of several in a years-long campaign of bullying that he will later describe, in interviews given from positions of enormous wealth and power, as the worst period of his life: worse than any of the adult crises that nearly destroyed his companies, worse than the night in 2008 when his marriage and his rocket program and his car company were all hours from collapse, worse than anything a single decade of American Silicon Valley venture capitalism has since thrown at him. The beating at the bottom of the staircase is not the worst thing that happened to him in this period. The worst thing is what his father said when he came home to Pretoria.
Errol Musk, an electromechanical engineer with investments in emerald mines and pretensions to philosophical authority, does not drive to the hospital. He lets Elon return home on his own, in the care of his mother. When the boy enters the house, broken nose and all, Errol sits him down and explains, with the patience of a man unburdening himself of a long-considered verdict, that Elon has brought this on himself. That he is difficult. That he antagonizes other boys. That the other boys are, as far as Errol can tell, correct.
Years later, in one of the interviews he will give to the biographer Walter Isaacson, Elon will pause for several seconds and then say, quietly: He was relentless.
The adjective does considerable work in the sentence. It describes Errol's contribution to the bullying: a father who sided with the attackers of his own son, who offered no sympathy for the physical harm, who spent hours after each incident cataloging the ways Elon had provoked it. But relentless is also the adjective that journalists, colleagues, investors, and ex-employees would spend the next four decades applying to Elon himself. The son had studied the father. The son had taken the trait that had been used against him and had installed it as his own operating principle. What Errol was to Elon, Elon would become to every other human being who tried to exist within his radius of influence: relentless.
Pretoria in 1983 was the administrative capital of apartheid South Africa, a Highveld city of jacarandas and government buildings and Afrikaans-language bureaucracy, organized along racial lines maintained by an entrenched and increasingly violent state. The white-minority government was in the late phase of a regime that would not, in the next decade, survive. The Musks were part of the English-speaking white minority within the white minority, descended from a Canadian mother and a South African father, carrying passports that allowed them options most of their neighbors did not have.
The family structure, to a visitor of the period, would have looked prosperous. Errol was an engineer. Maye Musk (born Haldeman, in Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of a chiropractor-adventurer who had moved the family to South Africa in 1950) was a model and a nutritionist, tall and elegant, already building the career that would, fifty years later, place her on the cover of Sports Illustrated as the oldest woman ever to do so. The children were Elon (born June 28, 1971), Kimbal (1972), and Tosca (1974). The family lived in a good Pretoria neighborhood. There were property, maids, trips, private schools.
The family structure from inside was something else.
Errol's contribution to the household, per the consistent testimony of Maye, Elon, Kimbal, and Tosca across decades of subsequent interviews, was verbal abuse sustained at a volume and consistency that damaged everyone in the house. He lectured. He criticized. He forced his children to stand in place for hours while he enumerated their failings. Maye, in her 2019 memoir A Woman Makes a Plan, described leaving him in 1979, after nine years of marriage, as the single decision that saved her life. Elon was eight.
The custody arrangement that followed the divorce is the detail that matters most, because it contains one of the few genuine mysteries of Elon's life. Maye moved with the children to Durban, then to Johannesburg. Elon, at approximately ten, made a unilateral decision to return to Pretoria and live with his father. He has given, across the years, different and sometimes incompatible accounts of why. The most charitable is that his father was lonely and Elon felt responsible. The least charitable, and the one Isaacson's sustained access in 2022-2023 eventually produced, is that Errol had manipulated the decision, alternating charm and pressure in ways an eleven-year-old could not see through.
Whatever the decision-making process, the consequence was real. Elon spent his early adolescence, the years of the bullying at the bottom of the staircase, living with his father. Kimbal followed him for similar reasons. The boys were, in the words of Maye's later recounting, back inside the machine their mother had fled.
The machine was the father.
Errol Musk, as Elon would describe him decades later to Rolling Stone, to Isaacson, to the Biden-era 60 Minutes producers who eventually ran a profile, was a man who could not be argued with. He had, in his own telling, studied philosophy as a young man. He had flown light aircraft. He had, at some point during Elon's childhood, acquired a stake in an emerald mine in Zambia, a detail that would later be weaponized against the family in left-wing political discourse when Elon's adult wealth became politically available. (Whether the mine stake actually produced meaningful income is disputed; Errol has said yes, emphatically, and Elon has said no, emphatically, and the neutral documentary record tends toward a version that is smaller and messier than either framing.)
What is not disputed is that Errol Musk was, by any reasonable standard, a frightening person to live with. The quality Elon and Kimbal have described, in interviews across two decades, is not episodic anger. It is sustained analytical cruelty. Errol would identify a psychological weakness in his son and would then exercise it, in conversation, for hours at a time, on the thesis that doing so was for the son's benefit. Psychologists have a name for this pattern. Errol's children eventually did, too.
Around the house, over the dinner table, on drives to school, Errol would explain, in the reasonable voice of a man dispensing hard-won wisdom, that Elon was stupid. That Elon was ugly. That Elon would amount to nothing. That the world would grind him down because the world was composed of people Errol was, at forty, still unable to understand except in the language of their failures. The instruction was unrelenting. It would not stop. And because Elon was living in Errol's house, there was no one to appeal to.
Maye, in subsequent interviews, has said she learned about the severity of the Pretoria period only gradually, after she had already left and could not intervene. The children did not tell her. They did not tell anyone. They absorbed.
Elon has given, since approximately 2017, a vocabulary for what this did to him. He does not use psychological terminology. He uses the vocabulary of machines. He has said that his emotional range is limited because he learned early that the emotions he showed were weapons other people used against him. He has said that he can hold complex technical information in his head because there was a period, in Pretoria, when holding complex technical information was the only place he could escape to that Errol could not follow. He has said that the bullying at school was almost secondary, a version of Errol's analysis delivered by people with lower IQs and louder voices, and that his real formation happened at home, at the dinner table, listening to his father deliver extended critiques of his character while the boys' mother was elsewhere and the boys' only available response was to wait out the critique and return to their rooms.
The rooms had books.
Elon has told the books story so many times that it has acquired the patina of apocrypha, but the essential outline is consistent across every telling. By the time he was eight or nine, he was reading at a level that his teachers initially disbelieved. He read the Encyclopædia Britannica front to back, by his own account, twice. He read Isaac Asimov: the Foundation series, the robots, the Earth-as-cradle cosmology that would later structure his entire adult argument about Mars. He read Douglas Adams, whose Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the text Elon has most often named as the single most important book of his life. He read Robert Heinlein, Philip K. Dick, Arthur C. Clarke. He read, across approximately four years of childhood, a corpus that was both absurdly wide and absurdly narrow: speculative fiction about spaceflight, combined with philosophy that argued the universe was ultimately a puzzle that human intelligence could solve.
The reading was, his siblings have said, not a hobby. It was an escape. It was the kind of escape available to a bright kid in an abusive house, a portal into a world in which the rules were legible, in which the questions were resolvable, in which a sufficiently careful and sufficiently intelligent person could, in principle, understand everything. The escape was so complete that Maye and Errol and his teachers sometimes found him reading for eight or nine hours at a stretch, barely moving, responding to questions with the distant affect of someone who had gone somewhere else.
That affect would, in adult life, be diagnosed by Elon himself, on the stage of Saturday Night Live, in May 2021, as Asperger's syndrome. The diagnosis was not new to him, and not news to the people who had worked with him, and not a surprise to the psychologists who had long since written the textbook description of the pattern: intense focus, difficulty reading social cues, flat affect in emotional contexts, extraordinary pattern-recognition in domains that interest the subject. Whether the architecture was innate, whether it was formed by trauma, whether it was the consequence of a household in which any emotional display was systematically punished, this biography will return to in later chapters. What it can note here is that, by the age of twelve, the architecture was in place.
The code came next.
In 1983, the same year as the staircase, the same year as the hospitalization, Errol bought an early Commodore VIC-20 home computer. The machine, by the standards of the 1980s, was a low-end entry-level product: 5 kilobytes of RAM, a built-in BASIC interpreter, a hookup to a television that functioned as the monitor. It came with a manual. The manual included a six-month tutorial on how to program in BASIC.
Elon read the manual in approximately three days. He then upgraded, within a year, to a Commodore 64, the follow-on machine that had 64 kilobytes of RAM and a more developed BASIC interpreter, and that was, by 1983, the best-selling personal computer in the world. The Commodore 64's arrival in the Musk household was the enabling hardware for what came next.
He then wrote, at approximately age twelve, a video game called Blastar. The game was a 2D space-shooter in which the player controlled a pixelated ship and attempted to destroy an alien freighter carrying hydrogen bombs and status beam machines. The player earned points for each alien ship destroyed. The code was written in BASIC with assembly-language subroutines for the most performance-intensive graphics routines. Elon sold the source code to a local computer magazine called PC and Office Technology for approximately five hundred rand, roughly five hundred U.S. dollars in 1984 money, or about fifteen hundred dollars today. The magazine published the code in its December 1984 issue. The issue is, as of this writing, scanned and freely available online; the Blastar source code remains, on inspection by programmers who have subsequently reviewed it, an impressive piece of work for a twelve-year-old. In 2015, one of Musk's employees at SpaceX converted Blastar into a browser-playable HTML5 game and made it available online as a tribute; the game circulated widely, a fact that underscores the persistent cultural attachment to the origin story the code represents.
The story of Blastar has since become a load-bearing piece of the Musk origin mythology, and it carries the load for a reason. It demonstrates, at an unusually early age, the capability that would define his adult operating life: the ability to hold, in his head, an entire complex system (input, output, logic, edge cases) and to transcribe that system into working code. Most twelve-year-olds who attempt video-game programming produce something that barely functions. Elon produced something that functioned, that he successfully sold, and that was published in a commercial magazine.
The capability was real. It was also, per the testimony of every person who subsequently worked with him, the closest thing to a form of literal superpower that he possessed. His engineers at SpaceX and Tesla have, for decades, described the same pattern in different words: he can hold the entire schematic of a rocket, or a car, or a neural-interface chip, or a social-media platform, in his head (every subsystem, every dependency, every interface), and he can query any part of it in real time, asking pointed questions about subcomponents, catching errors that specialists who have worked on the component for years did not catch.
The capability is real.
The cost of the capability, the cost of the architecture that enabled it, is what the rest of this book has to account for.
The school where the attack happened was Bryanston High School, a government secondary school in Bryanston, a northern Johannesburg suburb. Elon had transferred there after a period at Waterkloof House Preparatory in Pretoria, and from Bryanston he would later transfer to Pretoria Boys High School, from which he graduated in 1988. His trajectory through these institutions was consistent: the same bright kid who could not read social cues arriving in peer environments organized around the social-cue-reading that South African white-male adolescent culture required in the 1980s. He was, per the accounts of classmates who have subsequently given interviews, not physically imposing. He was not socially assertive in the way the culture required. He read during lunch. He argued with teachers when he thought they were wrong. He was, across all three schools, the person the other kids had decided to target.
The target designation, once established in a peer group, tends to be self-reinforcing. The initial attacks at Bryanston were not the staircase. They were smaller: name-calling, physical jostles in the corridor, the social exclusion that precedes physical violence in the escalation sequence that has been, since Erik Erikson's early work and through the subsequent decades of bullying-research literature, the documented pattern of peer aggression against children identified as different. Elon, per his subsequent testimony, did not cry. Did not tell teachers. Did not ask Errol for help, having already learned what Errol's help looked like. He returned to the library and read.
The escalation, across approximately two years, produced the staircase.
The transition from Pretoria to everywhere-else begins, formally, in June 1989.
Elon is seventeen. He has, for months, been quietly preparing an emigration to Canada on the basis of his mother's Canadian citizenship. The preparation has been hidden from Errol. The rationale, given to various people in various periods, is a combination. Elon wants to avoid conscription into the South African military (mandatory service, at the time, in a regime conducting border wars in Angola and Mozambique and domestic repression against the Black majority). Elon wants to attend a university outside South Africa. Elon wants, at a level he was at the time not yet articulating publicly, to stop living with his father. All three rationales are true. The third is the one that, decades later, he will acknowledge as the one that actually drove the decision.
He leaves with a one-way ticket and a passport. He arrives in Montreal and sleeps in a second cousin's basement. He works odd jobs (cleaning boilers at a Saskatchewan sawmill, shoveling grain at a farm outside Regina, eventually cutting logs at a Vancouver Island lumber operation) while figuring out the logistics of Canadian university enrollment. He transfers, within a year, to Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where he will spend two years before transferring again, this time to the University of Pennsylvania on a scholarship.
At Queen's, between 1990 and 1992, he encountered, for the first time in his educational life, a social environment in which his conversational range was not entirely alienating. The university context, with its tolerance for intellectual intensity and its self-selected population of students who had chosen, for four years, to organize their lives around the exchange of ideas, was closer to the social environment the twelve-year-old reader had been looking for than anything Bryanston had offered. He was not, at Queen's, universally liked. He was, however, in an environment where being odd was less costly than it had been in South Africa, and where being able to hold long conversations about the future of technology and the long-term prospects of civilization was occasionally, rather than reliably, treated as a social liability.
He will finish his Wharton coursework by 1994 and his physics coursework the following year, the double major a characteristically Musk refusal to choose between the quantitative and the commercial. The physics degree was, in its immediate professional utility, the one that would allow him to talk to rocket engineers without embarrassment. The economics degree was, in its immediate professional utility, the one that would allow him to build a business plan. He would need both within seven years of graduation. (The two diplomas would not be formally conferred until May 1997, when Penn dropped a History-and-English credit requirement and his completed coursework cleared.) He will apply to Stanford for a PhD in applied physics and materials science. He will be accepted in 1995. He will arrive in California in the summer of that year, age twenty-four, walk into the graduate program, spend approximately two days thinking about whether to continue, and then walk out, because a different plan, one involving the commercialization of a nascent system of interconnected university networks called "the internet," has just become, in his analysis, considerably more interesting.
The exit from Stanford is the beginning of the adult biography.
The exit from Pretoria is the thing that made it necessary.
The staircase, both the concrete steps in the school in Johannesburg and the psychological staircase at home in the evening, is the source code. Everything that follows is, in one way or another, the program running.
The boy at the bottom of the staircase did not blink. He memorized the faces of the boys who had thrown him down. He memorized the words his father used when he came home. He memorized the shape of the injury to his nose that surgeons, decades later, would ask him about with puzzlement, unable to quite believe it had never been properly set.
He memorized.
He waited.
He built.
