Foreword
My subject has always been credit: who gets it, who does the work, and the machinery by which the two come apart.
I have spent my writing life on women in twentieth-century science and letters whose contributions were absorbed into the reputations of the men standing beside them. Nikola Tesla is not that. He was a man, and a celebrated one for a stretch of his life, and he does not belong on the list of the quietly erased.
He belongs in this book because the machinery is the same, and because he is the clearest case I have found of it operating on someone who had every advantage the erased normally lack. He was famous. He gave interviews. He had patents, priority, and a corporate partner. And by the middle of the century the American schoolroom had assigned his central achievement to another man, and he had disappeared so completely that the unit of magnetic flux density was named after him in 1960 by people confident that no child would ask who he was.
Understanding how that happens to a famous man tells you a great deal about how it happens to everybody else.
The mechanism, set out at length in these chapters, is unglamorous. He had no corporate champion after George Westinghouse died in 1914, and the company gradually stopped telling its founding story. He had no descendants, having never married, with his surviving relatives behind an Iron Curtain after 1945. He had no institutional base: no professorship, no graduate students, no school of disciples with careers invested in defending his priority. His final decades supplied grounds for embarrassment that translated smoothly into omission. And General Electric, the corporate descendant of Edison's interests, had every reason to keep telling the Edison version.
None of this required a conspiracy, and the enthusiasts who insist on one have made the recovery of his actual reputation considerably harder.
That brings me to the second reason I wanted to write this. There is now an enormous popular literature about Tesla, much of it devoted to suppressed inventions, free energy, secret seizures and things he is supposed to have known that we are not permitted to. It is a cult, and it is unusually energetic, and it has attached itself to a man whose real achievements are so substantial that the invention is unnecessary.
So this book is organized around a discipline. Every claim about what he built rests on a patent, a laboratory notebook, a contemporaneous account, or an engineering assessment. Where he announced something he did not demonstrate, and he did this repeatedly in his later years, I say that he announced it. The Wardenclyffe tower was never completed and never transmitted usable power. The particle-beam weapon he offered to several governments in the 1930s existed in description only. Saying so is not a slight on the man who gave the world its electrical system. It is the precondition for taking him seriously.
What is real is more than enough. The rotating magnetic field, worked out in Budapest in 1882 and reduced to practice in the polyphase patents of 1888. The alternating-current system that Westinghouse bought and that lit the Chicago exposition in 1893 and harnessed Niagara in 1895 and that runs, in its essentials unchanged, inside the wall behind you. The radio priority that the United States Supreme Court restored to him in 1943, months after his death and thirty-four years after Marconi's Nobel.
Two further things this book insists on.
His mother is in it properly. Djuka Mandic could not read and built her own household tools, and he attributed his visual imagination to her directly and repeatedly. In a literature obsessed with what Edison did to him, the woman who taught him how to think has been a footnote.
And the final decade is written without pity or ridicule. He lived ten years in a hotel suite quietly paid for by the company his patents had built, fed pigeons in a park, and dictated letters about future technologies to editors who published them out of affection. That is a sad ending and it is not a shameful one, and the pigeons have been used to make him foolish for eighty years.
He was born during a lightning storm in a rectory in Smiljan in July 1856, which sounds invented and is attested.
He died alone in Room 3327 on a January night in 1943, and the FBI came for his papers within hours.
Chapter 1 · Smiljan, July 1856
Smiljan in July 1856 was a parish of roughly eighty households, a small white church, and a market square. The summer thunderstorms came in the late afternoons off the Velebit range and broke over the Lika plateau in long curtains of rain that turned the dirt lanes into channels and silenced, for an hour or two, the cattle bells and the bees. Then the storms moved off east, and the smell of the orchard and the heat of the church stones returned.
The village sat in the central Lika, in the part of the Habsburg Military Frontier that ran in a long crescent from the Adriatic coast through what is now Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia and Romania — the defensive zone the empire had maintained against the Ottomans for two and a half centuries, since the 1620s. By the summer of 1856 the confrontation that had built the Frontier was finished. The Crimean War had ended four months earlier, in March, with the Treaty of Paris. The Ottoman threat had been demoted from existential to regional, where it would stay until the 1878 Treaty of Berlin and then the Balkan wars that would help bring on the First World War. The Frontier itself was now an administrative residue — old defensive architecture, old tax-and-service exchanges with the families recruited into the zone over the centuries, but no active war.
Those families were largely Serbian Orthodox, descendants of populations recruited from the late sixteenth century onward as anti-Ottoman defenders the Habsburg crown could rely on. Two and a half centuries of Lika residence had given them a Lika-Orthodox identity of their own: the religion and the language carried up from the southern-Serbian homelands, the bureaucratic incorporation into the Habsburg apparatus that Frontier life required.
At the center of Smiljan stood the white Serbian Orthodox Church of Saints Peter and Paul, set at the foot of the wooded hill the villagers called Bogdanić, beside a brook called Vaganac. In front of it was the market square. The villagers' houses — wooden, on stone foundations, in the Lika rural style — clustered around the church and trailed out along the dirt roads through the surrounding fields.
The priest of the village, in the summer of 1856, was Milutin Tesla.
Milutin had been born in 1819 in the Lika, one of two sons of Nikola Tesla — a Serbian who had served in Napoleon's army during the French occupation of the Illyrian Provinces and had then transitioned, in the years after Waterloo, to the military administration of the Austrian Empire — and his wife Ana. Milutin had a brother, Josif, and three sisters: Stanka, Janja, and one whose name the family records lost. Both brothers were sent first to a German-language public school and then on to the Austrian Military Officers' Training School, probably the Theresian Military Academy at Wiener Neustadt. Josif thrived there, eventually becoming a professor at a military academy in Austria and writing several standard works on mathematics. Milutin did not thrive. After a reprimand at school for failing to keep his brass buttons polished, he quit the academy and chose the priesthood instead.
He enrolled at the seminary of the Plaški monastery — the principal training institution for Orthodox clergy of the Habsburg Military Frontier, whose late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century reform cycles had folded Enlightenment secular subjects into a traditional Orthodox formation — and graduated in 1845, at the age of twenty-six, the top student in his class. By the end of his seminary years Milutin had a working command of five languages: Serbian, his mother tongue; Old Church Slavonic, the liturgical language of the Orthodox tradition; German, the language of the Habsburg administration; Italian, the language of the Adriatic-coast trade the Lika had long been tied to; and Latin, the language of the broader European clerisy.
The multilingualism would be the intellectual inheritance he passed to his second son.
He married Đuka Mandić in 1847, when he was twenty-eight and she was twenty-five. The match had been arranged through the standard Orthodox clergy-family network of the Lika. Đuka came from a clergy family deeper than Milutin's own: her father was Nikola Mandić, the priest of Gračac, about forty kilometers south of Smiljan; her grandfather and several of her brothers were priests too; her brother Nikolai would in time become the Archbishop of Sarajevo and Metropolitan of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Bosnia, and her brother Pajo would rise to general-staff colonel in the Austrian army.
Milutin's first parish after the marriage was a small congregation of forty households at Senj on the Adriatic coast, in a stony church perched on a steep cliff above the sea. There Đuka bore the family's first three children — Dane in 1848, Angelina in 1850, Milka in 1852. Milutin's salary at Senj was modest and the damp seaside air troubled his health; in 1852 he requested and obtained a transfer to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul at Smiljan.
Đuka Mandić Tesla was, by every account, a remarkable woman.
She had not been formally schooled. The Orthodox clergy-family tradition in mid-nineteenth-century Lika did not give its daughters the systematic curriculum it gave its sons, and Đuka — like most Lika women of her generation — could not read or write in any of the languages of the Habsburg world.
But she was acutely intelligent, and she was inventive in the practical, mechanical, domestic sense the Lika rural economy demanded. Over the years of her marriage to Milutin, from around 1847 to her death in 1892, she designed and built a long inventory of small tools, improvising from what the household had. The Tesla family oral tradition, preserved into the later biographies, credits her with roughly a dozen mechanical implements that improved everyday tasks: a mechanical egg-beater, a mechanical loom-shuttle, an improved butter-churn, several small agricultural devices for the kind of farm the Lika supported.
Modern Tesla scholarship has been cautious about the inventions' importance. By the standards of nineteenth-century industrial engineering they were modest. By the standards of Lika rural women's mechanical improvisation, also modest — Đuka was not unique in the region for that kind of ingenuity, and the family's emphasis on her work probably grew partly with the son's later prominence.
But the son himself, all his life, named his mother as the source of his own engineering capacity. He attributed to her his particular form of visualization — the trick, as he described it across his career, of designing and assembling mechanical and electrical apparatus inside his head, with such fidelity that conventional drawing, diagramming, and physical prototyping were largely unnecessary. The visualization-thinking would be, for half a century, the feature of his work that other engineers found most uncanny.
By his own attribution, it was his mother's gift.
Between 1848 and 1859, Milutin and Đuka had five surviving children. The eldest was Dane, born at Senj in 1848, eight years older than Nikola — and, in Nikola's earliest childhood, the formative figure of his life. The second was Angelina, born at Senj in 1850. The third was Milka, born at Senj in 1852. The fourth was Nikola, the subject of this biography, born at Smiljan on the night of July 9–10, 1856. The youngest was Marica, born at Smiljan in 1859.
The rectory at the moment of Nikola's birth — the modest but comfortable house attached to the Smiljan church — held, besides Milutin and Đuka, Dane (eight), Angelina (six), and Milka (four). The rhythm of the house was the rhythm of a priest's family: the daily liturgical cycle, the Sunday service, the seasonal calendar of feast days, the pastoral round through the Smiljan parish, the Lika-wide clergy correspondence that Milutin's mid-career standing required.
It was also the rhythm of subsistence. Milutin's salary from the Orthodox-Frontier administration was modest. Most of what the household ate came from the small farm the rectory worked: a few hectares with cattle, sheep, and poultry, a small orchard, a kitchen garden, run mainly by Đuka. The arrangement was standard for an Orthodox priest's household in the Lika.
The labor on the farm fell mostly to Đuka, with help from the older children and seasonal hired hands at peaks. The labor was punishing. The workload of a Lika rural woman in the mid-nineteenth century — agricultural work, dairy, preserving, weaving, child-rearing, the upkeep of the house, the pastoral support duties expected of the priest's wife — filled most of the daylight in every season.
It was inside this house, in this kind of work, that Đuka had built her tools.
It was inside this house, in the small hours of July 10, 1856, that Nikola Tesla was born.
The birth was hard. Mid-nineteenth-century childbirth in Lika was primitive by the standards of European medicine. The midwife was local. The labor began late on the evening of July 9 and went through the night. The infant arrived around midnight, by the family's later reckoning — in the Old Style Julian calendar the Habsburg Serbs of the Frontier still kept.
The night was stormy. A thunderstorm had been moving across the Lika all evening, and the lightning and the thunder did not let up. The midwife spent the labor managing both Đuka and the household's nerves.
When the boy was born — at, the family said, the moment of one of the heavier strikes — the midwife is supposed to have called him a child of the storm. In the Serbian Orthodox folk-religious idiom of the region, she added that the storm's timing meant he would be a significant figure in his later life.
Đuka's reply was the one the family would preserve across the generations:
"No. Of light."
Whether the sentence was spoken in the room or composed later by an oral tradition shaped by the son's eventual prominence — the eventual biographical tradition would treat it as the foundational prophetic line of his career. The half-century of contribution to the electrical engineering of Europe and America was, in the family telling, foretold in that one sentence in that one room.
The infant, Nikola Tesla, son of Milutin Tesla the Serbian Orthodox priest of Smiljan and of Đuka Mandić Tesla, was the fourth of the five surviving Tesla children.
He would, over the next eighty-six and a half years, become the single most consequential individual contributor to the alternating-current electrical infrastructure modern technological civilization was built on.
In the small hours of July 10, 1856, he did not know any of it.
